Monday 18th April 2011 - Hyper Quick Working Process.

I've been meaning to upload some of this for a while, as i've spent a load of time on a triptych of images, i'll show how they progressed from a semi rough stage to a more rendered finished piece.

This is pretty much as close to as a draft as I can show, other than this they're all 3x5 thumbnails that even I have trouble discerning. Drawn with a HB clutch pencil and inked super quick with a mapping pen, this is the start of it all.

Although I had a vague idea of where I wanted this image to go, I thought it still prudent to test out various rendering options, photocopying one panel at random, duplicating it and spending a maximum of 10 minutes on each using entirely different processes to see which suited it best.

I didn't screencap anything inbetween, but at this stage all I done was scan in 3 traditionally drawn panels, blown up to 165% of their original size, and then proceeded to lay multiply layers over it, working solely in greyscale. Once happy, I saved that option and added very low value colours.

This is the Greyscale version...

And these are the coloured versions, as you can see, not much has changed in terms of value, only some areas i've focussed on with passes of colour.

Parallel to the digital renderings, I also done a more refined piece with my mapping pens, using the qualities of the nibs to accentuate the folds and directional aspects of the tree in particular (below)...

Saturday 16th April 2011 - New Blog!

As it's Saturday and i'm a bit of a functional alcoholic, i've made a blog which will be a collaborative base for me and some of my classmates at uni. From there we'll share designs which we believe have marketability, and present them as such (show prints as printed, badge designs made up into badges, etc).

This can all be found here:

As to who the contributors are, i'm not quite sure yet... heheh...

Also, in the pipeline at the moment is the idea for a mass collaboration of illustrators into one big, self published, book. So, watch this space I guess!

Wednesday 6th April 2011 - Vectors

At uni we were told that for our current assignment we need to be able to use Adobe Illustrator to vector some of our designs. Thankfully, I introduced myself to illustrator about 18 months ago, and made this:

Yeah, it's the feather symbol from CS2. I followed a tutorial, getting an idea for how to path things and so forth. Then, as part of my final piece for my foundation course I made:

Very inspired by Shepard Fairey.

But that, as said, was all almost a year ago. So, instead of going to the workshops at uni which would be slow and arduous, I decided to have a go at vectoring again under my own volition.

Sigil of Baphomet. My first vector in 11 months.

A viking icon, something finished this morning. Each separate block of white is it's own path... Time consuming!

And the finished deal, gradients and stuff added over a clipping mask.
